Best Of 2008 Honorable Mention: Gang Gang Dance - Saint Dymphna

I had never heard Gang Gang Dance before I saw them at SUNY Purchase last year, and I was less than impressed with their performance. It appeared to be tuneless meandering and self-indulgent experimentalism, like a band practicing onstage. It was pretty dull until they got to the last song, and then everything changed. Suddenly, the bullshit was gone and in its place was incredible cascading sleekly skewed dance music. My initial hesitance evaporated, and I was on board. The song that changed my mind is on their newest album, Saint Dymphna. This album is a melting pot, with experiments in grime and dubstep ("Princes," "Inners Pace"), Latin tribalism ("First Communion"), and texture brought to the front ("Vacuum"). It's noise rock with dancing on its mind. While many bands embraced globalization in 2008, none did it as well. This is the song that sold me on Gang Gang Dance:
